Starting therapy for your child can feel like a big, emotional step---especially when you're trying to find the right support. As the owner of a multidisciplinary pediatric therapy practice serving families in Broomfield, CO and nearby communities, I've seen how much uncertainty families carry into this process, often long before they ever reach out.

For many, it starts with a quiet questions: Is this something we should be concerned about? By the time families connect with us, they're often balancing hope, hesitation, and a lot of unanswered questions.

As a clinic owner, there are a few things we hear again and again from parents once they are in the process---things they wish someone had explained earlier.

Different types of therapy support different areas-and often work best together

One of the most common surprises for people is how each type of therapy focuses on different but connected parts of development. And the very many ways that each can support daily challenges.

  1. Occupational Therapy (OT)- May support sensory processing regulation, fine motor skills, daily routines, and challenges that come with daily life across all ages, weather that's at home, school or work.

  2. Speech Therapy- Focuses on communication, connection, language, and social interaction and again can support through a lifespan including managing adult advocacy at work.

  3. Mental Health Services at Gather and Grow-support emotional well-being of neurodivergent individuals navigating things like Autism, ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, ARFID or Trauma through creating coping skills and supports.

Many of these approaches work very well together, where all therapists can be on board on sharing the same approach and strategies.

Progress doesn't always follow a straight line

It's natural to hope for steady, visible improvement--but progress in therapy often happens by layers. There may be times when things seem to improve quickly, followed by periods that feel slower or more challenging. This can especially be true when working on skills like communication, attention or emotional regulation.

A slower period doesn't necessarily mean something isn't working--it may be part of how new skills are developing over time.

The right fit can matter more than the fastest availability

When you're looking for services, it makes sense to want the soonest appointment. At the same time many families later share that feeling comfortable with their therapy team and their approach and care made a bigger difference than starting immediately.

Good Fit can include:

  • How your child responds to the environment

  • How clearly things are explained to you

  • Weather you feel included and supported in the process

You don't need to have the "right words" to ask good questions

Many parents worry about not knowing the right terminology or what they're supposed to ask or do. But therapy should feel understandable and collaborative.

It's ok to ask:

  • How do each service work together??

  • What does support look like day-to-day?

  • Why is this activity used in therapy?

  • How will we know if this is helping?

  • How do you approach and support Autism and ADHD

Open questions like these can help you better understand your options and feel more confident moving forward.

Consistency tends to matter more than perfection

It's common as a parent to feel pressure to follow every recommendation exactly. In practice, small consistent steps can have a meaningful impact to! Practicing a simple strategy at home when it fits naturally, keeping a regular schedule with appointments, and staying engaged even when the process feels gradual make a huge impact.

Support is most sustainable when it fits into your real life-not when it feels overwhelming. Its ok to communicate to your therapist if a strategy feels doable at home or out of reach. That can help them to provide individualized support that fits your family.

Pediatric Therapy in Broomfield, CO: What Families Often Need

Families in Broomfield as well as nearby areas like Lafayette, Westminster and Erie often come to us looking for support for kids, teens, adults and families with:

A final note

if you're considering therapy--whether related to communication, regulation, autism, ADHD, or something you can't quite name yet---its ok to still feel unsure. Many families start with questions, not answers. Learning more about your options doesn't commit you to anything. It simply provides you with more clarity about what support can look and feel like.

If you are in that early stage of wondering or feeling uncertain--starting with a conversation can often help. In our practice, we bring together Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Mental Health support in a collaborative way so families don't have to navigate each thing separately. Weather you're ready to begin or just want to ask a few questions, reaching out can be the first step! We offer an initial meeting to do just that---ask questions. You can schedule that here.
